In this dimly lit corner of the Duchess, between the men’s and women’s restrooms, hangs one of the few remaining photographs of the Duchess taken in the 1930s. In it, the Duchess shares space in the Green Building with the Kenwood Grocery. A wall was built in the building to create the Beer Parlor and Restaurant, and children were allowed in until 1936. This photograph from the 1930s shows a Standard Gas Station at the corner of Twenty-fifth Avenue NE and NE Fifty-fifth Street. The basic structure of the building has remained in later incarnations as first the Dari-Delite and then Kidd Valley restaurants. The large Victorian house visible in the left-hand side of the image remains almost unchanged today. (Courtesy Kidd Valley.)
